Adam Jones is another artist I connected with through On Song International. Adam is a Melbourne, Australia artist doing some alt-country, folk, and blues. “Walk Home” is one of those songs that will bring up memories. Click play on the video and see what you reminisce about while you listen. Read the story behind the song in Adam’s words below the video. Adam is the third Australia artist for me to blog.
The Story Behind “Walk Home”
I wrote the song about 2 years ago. I was attending a monthly songwriters performance night and the host had set a challenge for the songwriters attending to come back the next month with a song called ‘Walk Home’. I wrote this about a young man I know well who was struggling with alcohol addiction at the age of 26, having struggled with alcohol since about age 18. I wrote the lyrics first, based on what I knew and imagining him and his struggles. I then thought that a 6/8 time signature with traditional folk style fingerpicking in the key of C would suit the song and give it an ‘old time’ flavour. I then recorded on my album and also made a basic music video for it. I find that a lot of people like the story, relate to it, as alcohol addiction is a huge issue in our society, and enjoy the traditional folk sound of the song. I played the acoustic guitar and did the vocal on the recording, along with session musicians providing the rest. It was recorded at Damien Gerard Studios in Balmain Sydney in about July 2017.
Adam Jones Bio
Adam Paul Jones is an alt-country, folk and blues artist who was born across the ditch in Kiwiland and raised in his Australian family in Sydney and the mid-north coast of NSW. Adam began his ‘show business’ career with his own fully decked out puppet theatre at the age of just 8 and he would put on creative puppet shows for family and visiting friends. Thankfully, he moved on to drama lessons at the Sydney Independent Theatre Children’s Drama School. He appeared in a several plays, some with his father who was an English History and Drama teacher at the local high school (and taught Mel Gibson).
Music came next with lessons in classical and folk guitar. By the age of 12 he had taught himself to play and sing hundreds of songs, including about 50 Beatles songs. Encouraged by his parents, and much to their relief, the puppet show was retired in favour of concerts for family and friends.
Adam’s wide range of influences include The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, The Eagles, Bob Dylan, David Bowie, Fleetwood Mac, Neil Young, Dire Straits, Lou Reed and Leonard Cohen, through to great Australian bands from the 70s through to the present such as Kasey Chambers, Paul Kelly, INXS, Midnight Oil, Crowded House, Hunters and Collectors, Australian Crawl, Mondo Rock, Tame Impala, The War On Drugs, The Drones and Courtney Barnett. Adam is now a dedicated songwriter, writing about 10 songs per month and constantly honing his performance and songwriting skills.
In August 2018 Adam made the big move to Melbourne from The Entrance on the Central Coast of NSW where he regularly performed.
Adam’s debut 12-track album ‘Little Death’ was released by Foghorn Records and distributed worldwide by MGM on 29th of September 2018, with distribution and publishing agreements in place with Foghorn. This album which traverses genres of blues, rock, folk and country, has been very well received. On the 2nd of June 2018 Adam went back to Damien Gerard Studios in Balmain Sydney and recorded an acoustic version of Little Death, stripped back to just lead vocal, acoustic guitar and some lap steel slide guitar provided by the talented Slide Milligan of Wyong.
On 17th of August Foghorn Records released Adam’s debut single ‘I Want Love – acoustic version’ and a music video had been shot to be released simultaneously. Then on the anniversary eve of Little Death, on 28 September 2018, an Anniversary Edition of Little Death with new album artwork and photos, and a bonus acoustic full version of the album, was released to the world.
Plans are already afoot for more releases in 2019. This will be stripped back alt-country style music with a lot of blues and rock feels, featuring acoustic guitar, electric guitar, acoustic piano, drums and bass.
