Near the end of 2017’s summer, I met Every Lovely Thing online and blogged their song “Running.” Recently, I saw some social media from Marianne Kesler, one of the members from that group, and contacted her about sharing the story behind the song “Falling Into Blue.” I really enjoyed the production and sound of this song. I tend to like thinking about interpretations and this song has a good blend of balance and separation of tension and calm. Click play on the video for “Falling Into Blue” and see if you agree.
Falling Into Blue Story
The following is in Marianne’s own words:
I wrote this song during a time I rented music office space, so perhaps for the first time in my life, I was writing daily. Writing this way (rather than waiting for an idea strike me) was a fresh new concept.
I think I chose the topic simply because it was relatable. Each of us has at times experienced feeling blue, feeling loss. While the reasons for feeling ‘down’ may vary, the melancholy feeling is universally understood.
I tried writing this song without a specific situational reference; rather recalling my own periods of despondency or grief to help portray lyrical word pictures like “the kind of rain that lasts all day.” I wanted to draw the listener into that place. I worked hard syncing this with the video footage.
Here’s the crazy part! In the year leading up to recording the song, all sorts of things fell apart in my life; two family divorces led to huge relational shifts and schisms, then just before Christmas my only sister passed away. I actually shot the autumn graveyard scenes for the video with no idea of what was to come!
Reminds me once again that songwriters are conduits. Sometimes we are not completely aware of the all we are writing about ~ until we look back in retrospect.
Marianne Kesler Bio
Once called “the headbanger’s favorite folk artist” by a New England festival promoter, Kesler has taken her meld of acoustic driven pop/folk/rock music across the United States, and as far as Australia and the Netherlands. With six CD projects plus singles to her credit, 2018 finds her in a season of solo performances, and also co-writing as half of an ambient dream pop duo Every Lovely Thing.
When writing songs to perform herself, Marianne loves to describe her organic vibe as a quirky meeting between her favorite music artists: “Imagine if Joni Mitchell got together with Leonard Cohen for a writing session at the coffeehouse where Neil Young and Counting Crows were playing, folk artist Jan Krist was singing, Tori & Fiona were pouting, and Over The Rhine & Aimee Mann opened … Yeah, it sounds something like that!”
